Welcome to the COASTAL Biogas Newsletter

COASTAL Biogas is an Interreg South Baltic Programme project, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and coordinated by FNR, Germany. The project focusses on the removal of nutrients from the Baltic Sea by collecting cast seaweed to counteract eutrophication. The collected seaweed is used as co-substrate in anaerobic digestion and the digestate as an organic fertiliser.

COASTAL Biogas report on potential and policy frameworks

The report contains an estimation of the potential of cast seaweed in the territory covered by the Interreg South Baltic Programme.  In addition, policy frameworks related to the use of seaweed, as a potential feedstock for green energy production and digestate utilisation, as well as regulations on establishing biogas plants in DE, DK, LT, PL and SE have been compiled in the report.

COASTAL Biogas report on operating biogas facilities utilising anaerobic digestion of cast seaweed

The report includes the whole aquatic biomass handling chain, from substrate collection, storage and pre-treatment to biogas production and digestate utilisation, of two separate biogas facilities in Denmark, Solrød Biogas, and Sweden, Smyge pilot plant.

Invitation to 4th COASTAL Biogas conference and study tour

The fourth conference will take place on the 9th of December 2020 as an online event. Do not miss the opportunity to connect with representatives from research institutions, political organisations and coastal municipalities, who share their interest in the potentials and challenges regarding the collection and use of cast seaweed and production of organic fertiliser and biogas. The conference ends with a virtual study tour.

Participation is free of charge but limited to 100 people.

Last November Rostock University (UROS) celebrated its 600th anniversary. With the motto “Traditio et Innovatio” it offers a wide range of study courses – from medicine to engineering to agricultural and natural sciences. The university has been the starting point for numerous research institutes and companies in the region.

In the COASTAL Biogas project the University’s Department of Waste and Resource Management collects information on the conditions for the project’s concept in Germany and provides support for dissemination.
